Features

Overview

The IBM 6x86** microprocessor provides exceptional sixth-generation performance to handle today's complex software with ease. This superscalar, superpipelined CPU features a revolutionary advancement in the architecture of the x86 family of IBM microprocessors. Instruction execution has been improved to take full advantage of high clock rates, offering the high performance required in today's desktop systems. That's something you can't get by just driving up the clock rate of the 486 architecture. Because the IBM 6x86 microprocessor delivers both superscalar and superpipelined architectures for optimal performance, PC users now have the advanced processing power they need to run multimedia, business and other complex applications faster. That's Performance Plus!

To further improve performance, the IBM 6x86 microprocessor core is optimized for instruction throughput by using advanced architectural techniques, including maximum register renaming, out-of-order execution, data forwarding, branch prediction and speculative execution. These advanced architectural features clearly demonstrate theres more to microprocessor performance than megahertz. The IBM 6x86 microprocessors outperform the comparable Pentium** microprocessors.*** Additionally the IBM 6x86 microprocessor is compatible with many Pentium microprocessor chipsets and sockets. That's Performance Plus!

The IBM 6x86 microprocessor requires either a 2.8 volt or 3.3 volt core supply. On-chip power management features allow power-down of the on-chip FPU and activate a hardware-suspend mode that automatically reduces power consumption. The processor also implements System Management Mode (SMM) to control power flowing to system peripherals. These energy efficient features conserve power both within the processor core and the overall system, saving money. The IBM 6x86 microprocessor requires either a 3.3 volt supply or a split-rail motherboard that supports a 2.8V core and a 3.3V I/O.

The IBM 6x86 microprocessor is designed so that you can enjoy the performance whether you are cruising the information superhighway, working in a networked environment or just flying solo. A speed limit won't be an issue. That's Performance Plus!
